Celebrations of Carey Day 2019

The 258th Birth Anniversary of our founder father Rev. Dr. William Carey was celebrated in a grand a very special way this year. The Honourable Chief Minister of Mizoram Mr. Zoramthanga was the Chief Guest and Speaker. He presented a very inspiring speech on the topic “Serampore College and its influence in the Northeast” The other dignitaries present were his wife Mrs. Roneihsangi, Mr. Steen Malthe Hansen, Deputy Head of Mission, Royal Danish Embassy. Mr. Joseph Nappo from the Royal Danish Embassy was also present.

Like every year this year also the celebrations began with the morning procession from the college campus to Carey cemetery.  With due honour and respect, the tombs of Carey, Marshman and Ward were garlanded. Scripture reading was done by students of Theology in many Indian languages. Rev. Dr. Limatula Longkumer, Dean, Dept. of Research/SATHRI delivered a short message.

This was followed by the distribution of Serampore Scholarship (funded by Govt. of Denmark through Royal Danish Embassy, New Delhi) and the academic prize distribution. Later on cultural programme followed and in the end the celebrations ended with the Football Final match.

On 16th August 2019, like every year, keeping in mind the keen interest of Dr. William Carey in botany and plant life, 10 new trees were planted and two Arabian Palm trees were replaced as the previous ones had withered and died.
