When and where was Serampore College founded?
Ans: The Serampore College was founded in 1818 at the town of Serampore of the district of Hooghly in the state of West Bengal in India.

Who were the founders of Serampore college?
Ans: the three Christian missionaries – William Carey, Joshua Marshman and William Ward were the founders of the College.

What was their aim in imparting education?
Ans:
They desired to have the College opening its doors to all students irrespective of their caste, colour and creed. It was made imperative to admit students with the understanding that the instruction would be secular in character

What is unique about Serampore College?
Ans:
It is the first missionary college in India. Following the aim and purpose of the founders, the college imparts quality education in Christian Theology as well as secular Arts-Science-Commerce. It has the status of a University empowered by the Royal Charter granted by the King of Denmark in 1827. It is also affiliated to the University of Calcutta to run diversified postgraduate, undergraduate, diploma and certificate courses in Arts, Science and Commerce.

When was the college affiliated to the University of Calcutta?
Ans:
Serampore College was among the first ten colleges to have been affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The University itself was established in 1857 and the College was affiliated to it since its very inception for Arts and Science Departments. However Department of Commerce was affiliated in 1969.

How many post graduate and under graduate courses are run by the College?
Ans:
The college offers P. G. courses in two disciplines, Honours Courses in Fourteen disciplines, General Courses in five disciplines and Major Course in one discipline. For details please visit ACADEMICS section.

Is there any other courses?
Ans:
The college also offers Diploma Courses in
i) Journalism & Mass Communication
ii) Social Work (DSW)
and  UGC Sponsored Career Oriented Certificate Course In Applied Sociology

Is there any facility available for the International students?
Ans:
The Carey Library and Research Centre of our college preserve rare papers, documents and manuscripts from the days of the founders of the college. This centre is the main attraction of International scholars who carry out their research with the help of this library and research centre. It remains open on all working days from 11.00 a. m. to 5.00 p.m.

How are the students selected for admission to different courses?
Ans:
Students are admitted strictly in order of merit. In addition, Honours students are admitted after proper counselling. For admission to General course a student has to pass the previous qualifying examination. For details please visit ADMISSION section.

What are the extension activities?
Ans:
Administrators, teachers and specially the In-Charge of the NCC Unit and the Programme Officer of the NSS Unit of our college motivate students to participate in extension activities. The NSS Unit organizes orientation programmes on Social Awareness to attract the attention of the teachers, students and the local community.
