Introduction

The National Service Scheme was launched in 1969. Popularly known as NSS, it aims at developing student’s personality through community service. NSS is a voluntary association of young people in Colleges, Universities and at +2 level working for a campus-community linkage.

The cardinal principle of the NSS programme is that it is organised by the students themselves, and both students and teachers through their combined participation in community service, get a sense of involvement in the tasks of nation building.

Besides variour programmes volunteers of NSS unit organised regular weekly meeting with the slum dwellers in the adopted areas for solution of the problems in the area. They worked together with the local people to keep the adopted area clean throughout the year. Condition of public toilets, drains, taps were improved with the help of the appropriate authorities. A Self Help Group was organised during 10 day special camping programme. This Self Help Group took help of the volunteers to start a Vocational Training Centre. Initially a Tailoring School for unemployed youth and housewives in the adopted slum area is established by the NSS unit.

NSS unit of the College is running the Placement Cell since August, 2007. More than 500 aspirants were given chance to appear in the campus interviews. A good number of students ultimately got job. This year NSS unit is given the responsibility of running Career Corner, to be established by the Government of West Bengal.
