Department of Journalism & Mass Communication

About the Department:

Serampore College has a rich legacy of William Carey, Marshman and William Ward who had great contribution in the development of Indian Press. Journalism & Mass Communication Department in Serampore College had been started in 2009 with One Year Diploma in Journalism & Mass Communication (Add-On Course). Keeping in mind its demand, our college has introduced a Three Year Degree course (General), which follows Calcutta University Curriculum. The intake capacity of both the courses is 40. Gradually, this department has become most active and colourful department of the college. In addition to regular academic curriculum, the students of the department get exposure to various activities inculcating their passion of becoming a good journalist.

About Seminar Library:

Departmental Seminar library is well equipped with books, CDs and DVDs which the students can access to enhance their learning process.

Activities:

Besides regular academic curriculum, students are encouraged to participate in quiz, debate, photography, reporting and different cultural activities, to manifest the best potentialities in them.

A Lab Journal entitled Liaison is published annually to facilitate exposure to the students as cub journalists.

Students are assigned as reporters and photographers to cover different events in the college like seminars, sports and celebration of important days like International Womens Day, Carey Day, World AIDS Day etc.

We encourage the students to make documentary films in different subjects which are widely acclaimed by the viewers. Films like Coffee House and Maatii Jibon are worth mentioning.

We organise excursions and make documentation to those areas to familiarise the students with different culture and develop their communication and event management skill.
