About the Department

The year 2009 became another glorious year in the annals of Serampore College when the Department of Zoology opened the first Post-Graduate Course in this age-old institution. The course is run in Semester System under the University of Calcutta. The intake capacity is 25 and at present following two elective papers are running:

At present the Department offers two elective papers, based on the options given by the University of Calcutta- i) Wildlife and Conservation biology ii) Molecular Cell Biology

With the passionate involvement of the staff and students alike, the department is marching steadily towards academic excellence with all vigour and colour. The teachers are actively engaged in scientific research which is evident from the four UGC minor and one major research projects already completed in the department and one UGC Major Research Project currently undertaken. Students, apart from their regular classroom studies, are constantly encouraged and oriented towards planning their future career with programmes like » outside laboratory visits, field training and workshops, participation in seminars and conferences etc.

Message of the H. O. D.


The department’s gradual but inspiring progress from the inauguration of B.Sc General degree courses to B.Sc. Honours degree courses and finally till M.Sc degree courses is believed to have aided lots of students in their academic endeavour.

The Dept. Of Zoology has had the privilege and the opportunity to emerge as the very first department in the college to have inaugurated the Masters degree course. I extend my heartiest gratitude to the administration of the college who have played a pivotal role in materialising the various initiatives of the department. I sincerely hope that this dept. with its esteemed academic faculty, skilled non-academic staff and my beloved students will scale newer heights in future.

Seminar Library

The department has separate under-graduate and post-graduate seminar libraries with lending and reading facilities for teachers and students alike. The seminar library of the department is well stocked with around 500 books on various areas of animal sciences. The libraries are constantly being enriched with necessary reading materials. The department has recently introduced a special Biodiversity Study Section in the seminar library with field guides and dedicated books on faunal identification. This department is also the first department in this college to introduce a DVD library with subject related documentary films and other audio-visual aids.

Alumni

The  department prides in having its alumni Mr. Amit Chattopadhyay and Dr. Soumyojit Banerjee as teaching members. The department has organized its first departmental re-union in March, 2010 and the process of forming an Alumni Association in the department has started. All our alumni are cordially and strongly encouraged to contact the HOD regarding any query in this matter.
