Faculty Recognized for Outstanding Achievements

The academic outreach activities are measured by extraordinary contributions of faculty to the public that occur as an outgrowth of academic pursuits and are related to the College’s academic mission. Defined more specifically, outreach service extends the faculty’s disciplinary expertise acquired through research, scholarship, and creative activity to the community.

This year, two such Faculties Dr Sanjay Sarkar and Dr Subarna Ghosh from department of zoology of our college have been invited to speak on their research findings and share their research activities at the 23rd National Conference of the Zoological Society of Bangladesh (ZSB).

This year the event was held on the 28th of January 2023 at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban and Department of Zoology, University of Dhaka, Dhaka. The inaugural session was graced by the Chief Guest, Mr. Nurul Islam Sujon MP, Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Railway, Bangladesh Secretariat, Dhaka, Prof. Dr. Mohammad, Aktharuzzaman, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Dhaka. Mr. Md. Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Chief Conservator of Forests, Bangladesh Forest Department; Dr. F. H Ansarey, President, ACI Agrobusiness and Prof. Dr. Hamida Khanam, President, Zoological Society of Bangladesh was present the occasion.

The Zoological Society of Bangladesh was established soon after the Independence of Bangladesh in 1971 with an objective to promote the Science of Zoology along with the branches, both pure and applied. Now the Society has about 2600 members. The Society publishes biennially a scientific Journal The Bangladesh Journal of Zoology in English from December 1973 and this year it published its volume 50 (1 and 2)  with ISSN number 0304-9027 and  Online Number 2408-8455 The Society also publishes a newsletter Shankhacheel in bangla which keeps the members updated different national and International affairs, news and activities with reputations. From 2014, the Society has been arranging “ZOOLOGY OLYMPIAD” to foster interest and awareness among the students and common mass people regarding preservation of bio-diversity and maintaining the environment in healthy state. Besides, the Society regularly organizes seminar, symposium and lectures from eminent scientists of both national and international recognition’s.the whole event was covered by National Bangladesh News Channel and was streamed live in web-media as an important events which decided new treaties about biodiversity conservation on Bangladesh perspective.

In this prestigious conference Dr Sanjay Sarkar, Entomology Research Unit, Department of zoology was invited as a as a Plenary speaker to talk on ” Conservation of biodiversity in Bangladesh Perspective “ In this session, he addressed the participants and delegates about the needs of taxonomy for Biodiversity Conservation. He also discoursed on his recently discovered two new species of plant feeding mite species for which Dr Sarkar received Indo-Asian  Best Scientist award 2022 and Best scientist award in Entomology 2022 from IMRF. His research findings intrigue many interest among students and scientists participated from different nationals.

Dr Subarna Ghosh , Department of Zoology was invited to talk on ” Conservation of biodiversity in Bangladesh Perspective ” In this session she spoke on the need of molecular taxonomy for proper identification of species which is nowadays considered very much an essential criterion to designate a organism as new species or re-described one from taxonomic point of view. She also emphasized on host parasitic relationship and the importance tissue specificity whenever describing a species as a part of identification. Her work on ssrDNA of a cnidarian fish parasite Myxobolus sp. grows many interest among the students as these cnidarian specific gene isolation technique which she is doing in collaboration with YAMAGUCHI UNIVERSITY JAPAN and INDO-HUNGARIAN DST NKIF project in collaboration with Serampore college is very new to science and it has totally given the species a new systematic position which has not been incorporated in the journals and books related to taxonomy and biodiversity. Thus from her findings Md. Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Chief Conservator of Forests, Bangladesh Forest Department has proposed her to do collaborative work along with Serampore college to identify restore and preserve species of national biosphere reserve and place of interest as biodiversity hotpot Sunderbans. Thus Serampore college along with Bangladesh ZSB and Hungarian Fish Pathology and Parasitology Research Team, Veterinary Medical Research Institute is planning to formulate a cross country collaborative project on biodiversity for preservation and conservation of species of interest.
