Restoration-Main Building

Thanksgiving service for the restoration and renovation of the Main Building

Dear friends,

On this memorable day, I greet you all in the name of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.

This historic Main Building construction was started by the first Principal and founder of the College in the year 1820. It has stood tall for the last two hundred years. As it has become aged and also continuously used for various purposes, this historic building is in dilapidated condition. I was informed that all the former Principals tried their best to restore and renovate it. After many years of long waiting, by the grace and God and support and cooperation from all corners, the dream is coming into a reality. I feel privilege and honour that in my tenure as the 22nd Principal of this historic institution, the dreams of all the Serampore College Community, the alumni and all the people who admired Rev. Dr. William Carey around the globe is fulfilled. I thank God all the guidance that I have received.

I am extremely happy and grateful to inform you that on 3rd December last year, I signed the Work Order for the Restoration and Renovation of the Main Building, and handed it over to the selected contractor in presence of the members of the Building Committee whoever was present in the campus. I want to point out that we have followed the e-tendering process and all the guidelines of the Government of West Bengal. Today is a Historic Day and a remarkable milestone.

I am very grateful to the honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, the former MIC, Higher Education Dr. Partha Chatterjee, and the present MIC Shri. Bratya Basu and all the officials from the Higher Education Department and Finance Department, Government of West Bengal who were involved in sanctioning the needed funds for the Restoration and Renovation Project of the Main Building.

I also thank the administrative officials of the Faculty of ASC, Dr. Biddyut Banerjee, Vice-Principal, Mr. Jisnu Dasgupta, Bursar, Dr. Saradya Ray, Secretary, and also to Dr. Bhaskar Chowdhury, Department of Bengali for their tireless efforts for the success of this project. I extend my gratitude to all my colleagues, faculty members, non-teaching staff, students and alumni for their support and cooperation.

I take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Gopa Sen, the Architect Consultant who worked very hard for preparing the DPR. Because of her expertise, the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal accepted the said DPR.

Let us join hands and continue to work for this historic institution by

“Expecting Great things from God and Let’s Attempt Great Things for God”.

Thank You.

Today is a Historic Day and a remarkable milestone. This historic Main Building was constructed by the 1st  Principal and founder of the College and after long waiting, by the grace and God and support and cooperation from all corners, the 22nd Principal fulfilled the dreams of all the Serampore College Community, the alumni and all the people who admired Rev. Dr. William Carey around the globe.

After doing all the formalities, the work will start as soon as possible.

Special thanks to the Honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal Smt. Mamata Banerjee, the former MIC, Higher Education Dr. Partha Chatterjee, the present MIC Shri. Bratya Basu and all the officials from the Higher Education Department and Finance Department, Government of West Bengal for sectioning the needed fund for the Restoration Project of the Main Building. I also thank all my colleagues, faculty members, non-teaching staffs, students and alumni for their support and cooperation.

Restoration Project of the Main Building.

The historic Main Building of Serampore College was built in the year 1820 by the first Principal and one of the three founding fathers of Serampore College, Rev. Dr. William Carey. Therefore, this year marks the Bi-Centenary of this heritage building. Unfortunately, it has long been in a dilapidated condition. So on this occasion of the Bi-Centenary of the College, the present-day Principal and CEO Dr. Vansanglura took the initiative for repairing this age old building and accordingly requested the Government of West Bengal to extend their help in the matter. This was partly as the financial burdens of such a project are ordinarily beyond any college. For this purpose, the Principal had several rounds of meetings with the concerned authorities, and going through the arduous process necessary, the college submitted the DPR (Detailed Project Report) to the Government and requested for the utmost help needed.

The dream of Serampore College fraternity has been fulfilled by the Govt. of West Bengal, thanks to the support extended by the Honourable Chief Minister, Ms. Mamata Banerjee, and the Honourable Minister-In-Charge, Department of Higher Education, Dr. Partha Chatterjee, for accepting the request and granting the necessary monetary help required for the restoration work. The College is also grateful to the personal initiative taken by the Principal Secretary and the Special Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal, and all other officials, of the Department of Higher Education, the Public Works Department, the Finance Department (all of the Government of West Bengal), and of concerned persons in the Serampore Municipality and Hooghly Zilla Parishad, who extended their cooperation for the success of this project.

I also thank Dr. Bidyut Banerjee, Vice-Principal, Mr. Jishnu Dasgupta, Bursar, and Dr. Bhaskar Chaudhuri, Associate Professor, Department of Bengali of the Faculty of Arts-Science-Commerce (ASC), for their untiring efforts to get the much-required governmental assistance.

As the Principal and CEO of this College, it is my pleasure to announce that the financial assistance for the first phase has already been sanctioned and the restoration work will soon start.
