ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The University Grants Commission (UGC) launched a scheme for skills development based higher education is a part of college/university education, leading to Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc.) Degree with multiple entry and exit points. The B.Voc. Programme is focused on universities providing undergraduate studies which would also incorporate specific job roles along with broad based general education. This would enable the graduates completing B. Voc. to make a meaningful participation in accelerating India‘s economy by gaining appropriate employment, becoming entrepreneurs and creating appropriate knowledge.

It is designed with the objective to ensure that the students have adequate knowledge and skills so that they are work ready at each exit point of the program. It also integrates NSQF within the undergraduate level of higher education in order to enhance employability of the graduates and meet industry requirements.

COURSE OFFERED

University of Calcutta recommended three years B.Voc. (Retail Management) Course sponsored by UGC, New Delhi.

The B.Voc. Program in Retail Operations shall be for duration of three years consisting of six semesters and is a judicious mix of skills relating to professional education and general education on credit based system. The successful students will be awarded Certificate/Diploma/Advanced Diploma/Degree in both Skills and General education components of the Curriculum. All the candidates continuing to diploma courses or further will be treated at par from the second semester onwards. Students may exit after six months with certificate (NSQF Level 4) or may continue for diploma or advance diploma level courses.

Sourav SarkarRetail Sector is one of the crucial sector for the success of companies across the FMCG, manufacturing and services sectors. The survival of a business is dependent on the product or service reaching the customer on time. This depends on an efficient retail operation as well as an effective logistics and supply chain process. Technology has increased the options available to the customer and enhanced the competitiveness of business. Thus, there is demand for trained professionals in the field of retail. The B. Voc. programme addresses this demand of the industry by including the study of a wide spectrum of topics including retail operations, warehousing, logistic management, supply chains besides computer applications and communication skills.

This course will enable the students to get placement in Retail Industry, Logistics and other marketing jobs in the Retail Sector. This course will enable the students to get jobs in service sector like service associates. The students will be able to contribute meaningfully in the operations management of retail and logistic sector enterprises.

The department does not have separate library facility. Student access books and journals from central library.

ACTIVITIES

  • The learning will involve theory & practical classes. The curriculum will be delivered through various methods including whiteboards and talk, power-point presentations, audio, video tools, field trips/Industry visits, seminars (talks by experts), workshops, projects and class discussions.Each student is encouraged to make presentations so as to take ownership of his or her learning and share the learning process in the classroom and feedback is given to every student.
  • The curriculum involves On the Job Training in every semester. It will help the students to cope with the latest trend in the Retail Sector, ensuring every students are able to perform their assigned tasks. The training will help the students to learn the real experiences of the company.
